KING MACKEREL

Scomberomorus cavalla

Identification overview

King mackerel are long, streamlined, fast pelagic predators with a metallic blue-green back and silver flanks. They have a deeply forked tail and sharp, triangular teeth visible even when the mouth is slightly open.

Key field marks

  • Slender torpedo-shaped body built for speed
  • Dark bluish back with bright silver sides
  • Strongly forked caudal fin
  • Prominent lateral line that dips sharply under the second dorsal fin
  • Large, knife-like teeth unlike Spanish mackerel’s finer dentition
  • Aging and appearance changes

  • Juveniles: More bronzy tint and occasional faint spotting; generally found in slightly shallower water and around bait schools.
  • Subadults: Body elongates quickly; lateral line dip becomes more obvious; color contrast sharpens.
  • Adults: Larger head and jaw profile, heavier shoulders ahead of dorsal fins, stronger metallic sheen.
  • Similar species and how to tell apart

  • Spanish Mackerel: Smaller overall, often with yellow spots, less dramatic lateral line dip.
  • Cero Mackerel: Vertical golden stripes/markings and different flank patterning.
  • Wahoo: Broader vertical bars and a stiffer, heavier-bodied profile at similar lengths.
  • Male vs female indicators

  • External sex differences are subtle.
  • Larger fish in many tournament and offshore catches are often female.
  • Spawning-condition fish may show fuller abdominal profile, especially females.
  • Habitat and behavior

  • Highly migratory along temperature fronts and bait concentrations.
  • Common around reefs, rigs, nearshore shoals, and current edges.
  • Feeds aggressively on sardines, menhaden, cigar minnows, and small pelagics.
  • Conservation and handling notes

  • Use wire leaders or heavy fluorocarbon to reduce bite-offs.
  • Bleeding and icing quickly improves table quality.
  • Follow current state and federal size/bag regulations; migration timing can change catch pressure.
