SPOTTED SEATROUT

Cynoscion nebulosus

Identification overview

Spotted Seatrout are slender, silver-gray fish with a greenish back and distinct black spots along the body and dorsal fin. The lower jaw usually projects slightly beyond the upper jaw, and the mouth has visible canine-like teeth.

Key field marks

  • Dark round spots on upper sides, back, and dorsal fin
  • Elongated body with two separate dorsal fins
  • Slightly protruding lower jaw
  • No chin barbels (distinguishes from croaker/kingfish species)
  • Aging and appearance changes

  • Juveniles: Fewer and fainter spots, more translucent fins, often found in shallow marsh nursery areas.
  • Subadults: Spot pattern becomes more distinct; body deepens slightly.
  • Adults: Larger females often appear heavier-bodied with broader head profile; spot density may vary by habitat.
  • Similar species and how to tell apart

  • Sand Seatrout (White Trout): Fewer body spots, thinner profile, generally weaker spotting on fins.
  • Weakfish: Spotting pattern differs and body often appears less robust in Gulf catches.
  • Red Drum juveniles: Can share habitat, but red drum show tail-spot emphasis rather than widespread dorsal/body spotting.
  • Male vs female indicators

  • External sexing is difficult outside spawning season.
  • Larger trophy fish are commonly female.
  • During spawn, males may produce drumming sounds (via swim bladder muscles), while females are generally fuller-bodied when egg-laden.
  • Habitat and behavior

  • Prefers seagrass beds, oyster reefs, and bay channels with moving water.
  • Feeds on shrimp, mullet, menhaden, and small crustaceans.
  • Most active around low-light periods and moving tides.
  • Conservation and handling notes

  • Handle gently; support fish horizontally to reduce jaw injury.
  • Follow current state regulations for size and bag limits.
  • Release oversized breeding fish quickly for stock protection.
